Quondam Ghetto

Quondam Ghetto

In 1865 within the suburban areas, on the road to Krośniewice, a sugar factory named "Konstancja" was built by the prominent industrialist Leon Epstein. During the World War II (June 1940) the Germans in the factory's buildings created a ghetto for the Jewish citizens of Kutno. They've managed to squeeze 8000 people in that small area.
In January 1941 an epidemic of typhus had broken out in which 500 people lost their lives.
In turn, on January 19th 1942 the ghetto was officially closed down and the remaining prisoners were
transported to the death camp in Chełmno on the Ner where they were killed by the Germans.
