The Rose History of Kutno

Monument of Bolesław Wituszyński in roses[0]

Roses are the most famous symbol of Kutno and the holiday which was once - many years ago - organized in their honor, has become a permanent part of the cultural and social life of our city.

The tradition of growing roses in the Kutno region flourished throughout almost the entire 20th century. It all started in dark times, just before the outbreak of World War I, when the Republic of Poland was not on the map. In 1912, in Adamowice, near Kutno, Aaron Eizyk, together with his brother Karol, founded a gardening farm, where, from 1919, roses were grown. The Eizyk brothers employed about a hundred workers, and they offered over nine hundred varieties of flowers. Their plantation was considered the best in Poland. SGGW students completed internships in their company. One of students who completed internships there was Mieczysław Albiński, who later became famous for his own breeding. He was also involved in building the rose tradition of Kutno. Bolesław Wituszyński was undeniably the most important figure in the history of rose breeding in Kutno. Thanks to his passion and commitment, today Kutno can proudly be called: The City of Roses.
